Diamond Select Marvel Movies Minimates review

Comic book movies are all the rage, I’m sure you’ve heard. Marvel properties in particular are pretty popular, what with the Marvel Cinematic Universe that encompasses film and television, and will seemingly go on well beyond all of our natural lives.

But it’s not just family-friendly fare from Marvel, as the very much R-rated films Deadpool and Logan pushed boundaries while still becoming massive hits. As different from a movie like The Avengers as they are from each other, Logan and Deadpool proved you could make a comic book movie that appeals to a specific demographic and still make bank at the box office.

That doesn’t mean they can’t be made into some pretty cool toys, though, and Diamond Select have sets of Minimates based on the Merc with a Mouth, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and everyone’s favorite Canadian mutant who is the best there is at what he does. Grab some shawarma and a chimichanga, and let’s see how these figures capture their onscreen counterparts.

Deadpool

The Deadpool two-pack includes Deadpool, of course, and the awesomely-named Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Deadpool comes with two guns, two swords, and a “thumbs up” hand, and NTW has an alternate body and head, along with some detachable energy elements.

The one drawback to Deadpool is that while he has holsters for his guns, there isn’t a way to stash or store his swords unless he’s holding them in his hands. Even a single scabbard on his back would suffice, so he can hold one of each weapon in his hands, though two would have been even and more comics and screen accurate. Other than this, though, it looks just like Deadpool should, and that’s all you could ask for.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead is just as cool, and I don’t have any real complaints. I do wish that one of her head sculpts had a bit more attitude to it, but given that she was less contemptuous and more dry, passive, and sarcastic in her demeanor, they fit just fine.

Logan

The Logan set contains two of the central figures from the Oscar-nominated movie: Logan himself and his teenage clone Laura. Logan has two bodies and interchangable hands– one set with claws and one without– and Laura has two different heads, two different hands, and a backpack accessory.

I’m kind of surprised Logan doesn’t have an alternate “screaming” or “berserker rage” face, though Laura has that covered. The sculpting on Logan’s jacket is quite cool, though I feel that the tanktop body is the more Wolverine of the two. Laura’s sculpt is just as nice, and the got her claws right by only giving her two as opposed to Logan’s three. Each figure has good range of motion on their limbs, making them easy to pose in action shots, which is fitting for each of them.

The Avengers

Finally, we have the original six Avengers, from the movie of the same name that you’ve probably seen. We have Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, captain America, Hulk, and Thor, all sculpted about as well as you could imagine in the Minimates size. Cap and Iron Man come with helmets you can slide on after taking off their hair, and most of the figures have the accessories you’d expect: Cap’s shield, Thor with Mjölnir, Hawkeye with a bow and like three arrows, Black Widow with two pistols, Iron Man has a base to simulate flight, and Hulk… is big.

Thor has my favorite sculpt overall, though there’s something about Iron Man’s armor that looks really cool too. Like Deadpool, Black Widow has holsters for her firearms, and Hawkeye’s quiver holds his arrows too. Cap’s helmet looks a little dorky, but that’s pretty much in line with his costume in the movie, so it works. Despite his size, Hulk is easily poseable, with a great range of motion in his arms and legs and a good center of gravity to allow him to balance well.

Both the Deadpool and Logan sets are Walgreens exclusives, and while the former is easy enough to find and goes for about $25, the Logan set is harder to come across. The Avengers set is widely available, though, and goes for $39.99 at online retailers, so if you’re willing to go hunting, you can find them all to recreate this:
